It would have been very easy to put six Rieslings together for this dozen as there are so many good examples out of the Eden Valley. We couldn’t resist accommodating some Pinot Gris and Chardonnay as well though. The Heggies Chardonnay has caused a lot of fuss in recent times and deservedly so. The Mountadam Pinot Gris is one of the best examples I have tasted and the growers Co-op Chardonnay from Eden Road offers some of the best value I have come across recently. If it’s Riesling you are after though you have to taste the Poonawatta, a dozen going straight into my cellar.
ABOUT THE REGION:
Maybe it’s the overwhelming reputation of its big brother, the Barossa Valley, that we don’t hear much Eden Valley sales hype. Continuing the sibling rivalry analogy the Eden Valley sits confidently in the top bunk, perched overlooking its brother the Barossa from a high elevation that is the key to the elegance of its wines. Henschke is probably the most famous of its brands but today we reveal a whole other bag of vinous gems.
